Internship and Practicum
Internships and Practica are a structured learning experience in a work setting that involves a partnership between you, the student, Marymount College faculty, and a particular company/organization. In an internship or practicum, a student will bridge and strengthen the connection between education and career.
Networking, who you know, is the most effective way to land your first position and participating in an internship and/or practicum is the fastest way to connect to people in a position that can lead to an offer.
Employers increased full-time job offers to their interns from 63.3 percent in 2010 to 66.7 in 2011.
INTERNSHIP and PRACTICUM COMPARISON
Practicum (296, 396, 496) is learning opportunity made available through a working partnership between Marymount College and an employer. A practicum is a part-time work experience worth from 1-6 credits* and is open to all students. Typically students participate in a practicum while taking several classes thus maintaining full-time status for financial aid purposes. The goal of participating in a practicum is to allow students to experience and test an occupation, industry and job function. Students do not have to take a practicum that is aligned with their major. Practicum sites may be with for-profit or not-for-profit institutions and may be paid or unpaid.
*Credit is earned according to pre-set credit hour equivalencies established by the College [see appendix) for credit-hour ratio.
Internship (291, 391, 491) is also a learning opportunity made available through a working partnership between Marymount College and an employer. An internship is worth 12 credits and is reserved for students of junior or senior status. An internship will require a full-time commitment from the student during the semester in which the student participates. The goal of participating in an internship is to allow students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an experience full that may lead to a career and/or job offer. Internship sites may be with for-profit or not-for-profit institutions and may be paid or unpaid.
Internship and Capstone Marymount students have a unique opportunity to combine the learning objectives of the Senior Capstone Project and match with an organization through an internship. Students not planning on graduate school will benefit with combining these two programs. Faculty should have a discussion with students in their junior year about the possibility of developing an internship around their Senior Capstone project. Juniors interested in this combination should register for the ID 317 offered every spring semester.
