The Phi Theta Kappa Honors Program is designed for those students with superior academic backgrounds who are highly motivated. Greater challenges are provided by the extensive reading and research requirements of Honors classes, which encourage students to articulate and defend their ideas by engaging in discussions and disciplined research. Honors courses in the College Catalog are designated with an “H.” After submission of an application to the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Program committee, and upon provisional acceptance to the Program, students are eligible to take Honors courses while maintaining an overall 3.30 GPA. Full membership in the Marymount College Phi Theta Kappa Honors Program may then be offered to the student. The College is a member of the Alpha Omega Kappa chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society.
Pre-Registration into Honors courses is limited to Phi Theta Kappa members, candidates and students permitted to take an Honors course prior to re-application. Students outside of Phi Theta Kappa may add the class only during the add/drop period with permission of instructor and only if course limits have not been reached.
Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Program
“The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”
Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918 by two-year college presidents in Missouri. The founders were seeking to recognize scholastic achievement by their students, and to establish a common purpose and standard for honors organizations on their different campuses. The founders chose to model their new Society after the prestigious senior honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. The name “Phi Theta Kappa” was taken from the initial letters of the three Greek words meaning “wisdom,” “aspiration” and “purity.”
Phi Theta Kappa is structured on three levels:
Local: A student becomes a member of Phi Theta Kappa through the local
chapter at a two-year college. The Marymount Chapter, Alpha Omega Kappa, was established in 1994 under the direction of Drs. Nancy Sanders and Charles Dock.
Regional: The Society has 29 regions; some regions are one state such as Texas or New York. Others are made up of several states such as New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) or Nevada/California
International: The Center for Excellence, Phi Theta Kappa’s International Headquarters, is located in Jackson, Mississippi. Today Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, British Virgin Islands and the Pacific Rim.
