Marymount Lacrosse Beats Cal Lutheran! Yes, Marymount!

 “We’ve got a miracle going here!”

That’s what Dr. Michael Brophy said when he saw Marymount College’s new lacrosse team win against Cal Lutheran.

If not a miracle, at least a little bit of “Rudy” has come to the beautiful campus on the bluffs of Palos Verdes. There were people who said a two-year college couldn’t have a viable sports team.  Thankfully, no one at Marymount listened.

Not Patrick Webster, Associate Professor of Mathematics who listened to the dream of student Brandon Buchmayr, a lacrosse player who transferred to Marymount from Hobart College, a Division 1 school.  Not the ASMC who Bruckmayr asked for financial support. Not the faculty who responded favorably and not Dr. Brophy who helped the team financially.

“Without all of us coming together as a school, administration and a determined student with a dream, this never would have happened,” says Patrick Webster who is quick to point out he is the team advisor and not the coach. Brandon’s job is coaching and he has the help of other players but all of them hope to hire a part-time coach next year. 

Webster believes that heart has a lot to do with the team’s success.  With a scrimmage and two games under their belt, Marymount’s lacrosse team is at a disadvantage. Their competition plays for four year universities with top notch facilities, coaching and funding and their players are often athletes with a history in the game. For most of Marymount’s players, this is the first time using the stick save for eight who played in high school.  The team practices every day at noon, some mornings at 7:00 a.m. and on the weekends. They have had to collect $10 from each player to cover the cost of referees but everyone agrees nothing is going to stop them from growing this team.

A great source of pride for Marymount is the fact that the GPA required to play is higher than what the NCAA requires – that and the fact that Marymount beat Cal Lutheran 12-9.
